What is the sacroiliac joint?

It is the joint between the sacrum under the spine and the ilium bones of the pelvis. The spine is supported by the sacrum which is in turn supported by the ilium bones. They are connected by strong ligaments. There are two sacroiliac joints, one on the left and one on the right. The main function of the joint is to absorb shock for the spine. It absorbs the force generated in the pelvis due to walking, twisting or bending.

What are the problems associated with it?

The major issue related to this joint is sacroiliitis. It is the inflammation of these joints. This inflammation causes severe lower back pain. Many a time, pregnancy, menopause, etc. can also cause slight dysfunction in the sacroiliac joints.
