How To Use Rolyan Pre-Cut Splint?

If desired, stockinette can be applied to the extremity to be splinted. Notice that the slit in the splint blank should be placed distally, and the distal portion that bulges out should be on the medial side of the foot .
1. Heat a 1 ?8" (3.2mm) Aquaplast-T splint as follows:
Heat pan: Heat in water at a temperature of 160° to 170°F (70°C to 75°C) for one minute or until transparent. Remove from heat pan and place on a flat surface. Pat dry with a towel.
Convection oven: Heat on a baking sheet with a non-stick surface in an oven preheated to 190° to 200°F (88°C to 93°C) for 4 minutes or until transparent. Heat a 1 ?8" (3.2mm) San-Splint® splint as follows:
Heat pan: Heat in water at a temperature of 160° to 170°F (70°C to 75°C) for 1.5 minutes or until soft. Remove from heat pan and place on a flat surface. Pat dry with a towel.
Convection oven: Heat on a baking sheet with a non-stick surface in an oven preheated to 175°F (80°C) for 2 to 3 minutes or until soft.

2. With patient seated, position ankle at 90° angle (a box covered with wet paper toweling to keep splinting material from sticking to it may help support heel and maintain appropriate angle). Place splint blank onto foot (B). Be careful that the splinting material does not roll under the foot. Patient can hold proximal splint portion in place.

3. Splint should be positioned: -Splint should support metatarsal heads but not extend under toes. -Distal border of the tarsal bar should be just distal to ankle crease. -Splint should clear malleoli.

4. After proper splint position has been determined, fold up medial and lateral borders distal to ankle crease.

5. Support foot in proper position while allowing splint to cool completely before removing it.

6. Lateral and medial splint portions should be less than half the width of the foot. Trim and flare splint as needed for proper fit. Material can be spot heated with a heat gun for trimming. Edges can be smoothed with a polishing tool or by heating them and smoothing them with finger tips.

7. Pad splint and add straps as appropriate. A properly applied Rolyan Anterior AFO Splint.
