Instructions:


  • Ensure that the gait belt is the correct size and weight rating for the patient.
  • Position the gait belt around the patient’s waist, not the patient’s chest.
  • Push the tip of the belt fully into the buckle; ensuring that both buttons have sprung back and are securely held in the buckle.
  • The quick-release plastic buckle is opened by squeezing the two buttons on the top and bottom of buckle.
  • Pull the strap to tighten.
  • Adjust the belt to fit snuggly; allowing enough room to slide both open hands between the belt and the patient.
  • Tuck the excess under the belt to the patient’s side, if required.
  • Move the buckle to the back of the patient.
  • Verify that the belt is properly secured, positioned, and fitting before assisting the patient.
  •  Securely grasp the belt from below with the palm of your hand facing way from the patient. Assist patient in accordance with the established procedures of your facility
     

Warnings:



  • A gait belt should never be used if it will endanger the health or safety of the patient or caregiver.
  • Check with the patient’s health care provider for the appropriateness of a gait belt and precautions before using. 
  • A gait belt is not for use as a restraint on wheelchairs, chairs, or beds.
  • Use gaits belts in strict accordance with your facility’s written procedures for approved assisted transfer, lifting, and walking procedures.
  • The caregiver must have the physical capability to assist the patient safely.
  • Two caregivers may be needed to assist some patients.
  • Gait belts are only to be used for assisting patients during transferring, lifting, and walking activities.
  • Inspect condition of belt before use. Discard the belt if damage to the belt or buckle is noted.
  • Do not exceed the stated weight limit of the gait belt.
  • The quick-release buckle should be positioned so that the patient cannot release the buckle during use.
  • Never leave the patient unattended with the gait belt applied.
     

Laundering:



  • Wash warm. 
  • Hand washing is recommended. Dry low.
  • Do not put belts through extractors.
  • Fasten all buckles before washing to minimize damage during wash and dry cycles.
